How to Clean a Shower Head and Remove Mineral Buildup

Weak shower pressure usually means mineral buildup, not a plumbing problem.

Weak, spitting water from an overhead fixture almost always points to one culprit: mineral buildup clogging the nozzles. Learning how to clean a shower head is a fifteen minute to overnight job that most homeowners can handle with vinegar, baking soda, and a plastic bag, no plumber required.

Why Shower Heads Clog in the First Place

Hard water is the main offender. As water evaporates from the tiny holes in a shower head, it leaves behind calcium and magnesium deposits that slowly narrow each opening. Over months, those deposits choke off flow and scatter the spray pattern into a crooked, weak dribble. Homes on well water or municipal supplies with high mineral content tend to see this happen faster, sometimes within a matter of weeks rather than months.

Vinegar works because it is mildly acidic, with a pH around 2, strong enough to dissolve calcium deposits without damaging most chrome, plastic, or stainless finishes. Baking soda, by contrast, sits at roughly 9.5 on the pH scale and is better suited to breaking down grease and soap film than mineral scale. Combining the two produces a satisfying fizz, but that reaction is mostly cosmetic. If you mix equal parts, the acid and base can neutralize each other and reduce cleaning power, so keep baking soda to no more than half the volume of vinegar.

Cleaning a Shower Head Without Removing It

This method suits fixtures that are hard to unscrew, or ones that only need light upkeep rather than a full teardown.

  • Distilled white vinegar (or a commercial descaling cleaner)
  • Baking soda (optional)
  • Gallon or quart size resealable plastic bag
  • Rubber band, zip tie, or tape
  • Soft brush, if needed
  1. Pour vinegar into a measuring cup, enough to fill the plastic bag about halfway. If you want extra grease cutting power, add baking soda at no more than one part soda to two parts vinegar.
  2. Transfer the solution into the bag, then slide the bag up over the shower head until it is fully submerged. Fold the top edges down and cinch the bag shut around the neck of the fixture with a rubber band, zip tie, or tape.
  3. Let it soak. A routine monthly cleaning needs only about 30 minutes. A heavily clogged head should soak for 4 to 8 hours, or overnight for stubborn cases.
  4. Remove the bag, then run the shower at full pressure to flush out loosened deposits and leftover vinegar. Wipe the nozzles with a rag or your thumb, or use a toothbrush on stuck on spots. Run the water once more, especially if you used a commercial cleaner, to clear any chemical residue.

If you reach for a commercial shower head cleaner instead of vinegar, read the label closely. Some rust and lime removal products, and many toilet bowl cleaners, contain acids strong enough to permanently dull or scratch chrome finishes. Always check that the product is rated safe for your specific surface, and use it in a ventilated bathroom since some formulas release strong fumes.

Taking the Shower Head Off for a Deep Clean

Removing the fixture entirely is the better route when buildup is heavy on the outside, or when you suspect the internal filter screen is also clogged. That screen sits inside the threaded portion of the head and catches sediment before it reaches the nozzles, so a soak alone won't reach it while it's still attached.

  • Adjustable wrench, if the head won't turn by hand
  • Rag or small cloth
  • Pliers, if necessary
  • Tweezers or needle nose pliers
  • Toothbrush or small nylon scrubbing brush
  • Bowl or pail
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Small sewing needle or straight pin
    1. Try unscrewing the shower head by hand, turning it counterclockwise. If it resists, wrap the fixture in a rag to protect the finish, then use an adjustable wrench, holding the shower arm steady with pliers as you twist the head or its retaining nut loose. Set aside any washer or screen that falls free.
    2. Wipe down the threads on the shower arm and check the head for visible grime. Cover a finger with a rag to scrape gunk from each nozzle, being careful not to tear the rubber spray tips, then rinse with water.
    3. Locate the filter screen inside the threaded connector and brush it out gently, noting which way it was facing. Use tweezers or needle nose pliers if it won't budge on its own, then rinse it clean or scrub lightly with a toothbrush.
    4. Submerge the entire head in a bowl of distilled white vinegar, with a small amount of baking soda added if there's noticeable grease or soap scum. Let it soak anywhere from one hour to overnight depending on how clogged it is. This step involves prolonged contact with an acidic solution, so keep it away from eyes and avoid using it near skin irritation or open cuts.
    5. Scrub the nozzles again with a toothbrush and a baking soda paste, then clear each individual hole by pushing a small pin or needle through it to dislodge hardened mineral deposits. Rinse thoroughly before reassembly.
    6. Replace the filter screen in its original position, then thread the shower head back onto the arm clockwise by hand, tightening as far as possible without tools. If you need a wrench for a final quarter turn, protect the finish with a rag and stop as soon as it's snug. Overtightening can crack fittings or lead to a leak at the joint. Run the shower at full pressure for about a minute to flush out any remaining debris or cleaning solution.

    How Often This Actually Needs Doing

    The right cleaning schedule depends entirely on your water. Homes with notably hard water may need attention every month, while those on softer municipal supplies can often stretch to every two months before flow noticeably drops. A quick vinegar wipe down as part of regular bathroom cleaning keeps surface scale from building on the exterior, but it won't touch deposits hardening inside the nozzles, so an occasional soak, attached or removed, is still necessary to keep water pressure consistent.

    Spraying the outside with vinegar and wiping it dry a few times a week is a low effort habit that cuts down how often you'll need to do the more involved soak and scrub version. A soft nylon brush used regularly on the nozzle face also helps, since it clears early buildup before it hardens into the kind of scale that requires pins and overnight soaks to remove.

    When Vinegar Isn't Enough

    If cleaning and soaking repeatedly fail to restore pressure, the mineral content of your water may simply be too high for spot treatments to keep up. A whole home water softener addresses the root cause rather than the symptom, and it has benefits beyond the shower: appliances like dishwashers and washing machines tend to last longer, and sinks and tubs need less scrubbing overall.

    Mold is a separate problem from mineral scale and calls for a different approach. A natural mold and mildew remover formulated for bathroom fixtures, rather than a straight vinegar soak, is the better tool there. And if you're tempted to grab cleaning vinegar instead of the standard distilled white vinegar from the grocery aisle, know that the difference is mostly acidity: cleaning vinegar runs about 6 percent versus the standard 5 percent. That extra strength isn't necessary for shower head maintenance and can be harsh on delicate finishes, so the regular bottle from the condiment aisle does the job just as well for less money.
