Plant selection is one area where a local office outperforms a national website or a generic plant tag. Growing conditions shift by ecoregion, and Kuder says Maryland's statewide team is building ecoregion based native plant resources so gardeners can match species to the right place. Native plants, having evolved alongside local wildlife and microbes, support more diverse food webs, she says. Choosing the right plant for the right spot also tends to cut down on irrigation and chemical use while protecting nearby waterways.

Piling on fertilizer without knowing a soil's composition can do more harm than good. Bryant says she personally relies on soil tests to guide exactly how much fertilizer to apply. Invasive plants and weeds are regulated to varying degrees by state agriculture departments, and Kuder says Maryland's extension office works directly with the state agriculture department to teach growers and the public how to identify invasive species and choose native alternatives. Because the science and policy around invasive species shifts quickly, Kuder describes extension's role as translating that changing information into practical guidance for the public.

Design Help, Natural Resources and Tree Problems

Extension master gardeners, trained volunteers who share their knowledge with homeowners, can advise on plant placement, mature sizes, shade and sun needs and drought tolerance. Wormuth says agricultural agents in Maryland tend to handle commercial farming questions while master gardeners field homeowner calls, publish guides, speak to community groups and staff plant clinics.

On the resource side, Kuder participates in the National Extension Native Plant Initiative, a nationwide forum where extension professionals trade native plant resources and identify gaps in existing research. Trees present their own risks, since a declining tree can threaten people and property. Extension offices track tree diseases common to their region and publish pruning and care guides. Maryland's online resources, for instance, cover tree pests, disease identification and species specific problems found in the state.
