Portable standby generators give homeowners a way to keep the fridge running and the lights on during a power outage without the cost or commitment of a permanently wired system. They are gas, propane or battery powered machines you wheel out, start up and plug appliances into whenever the grid fails.
What Exactly Is a Portable Generator
Most units on the market today put out somewhere between 3,000 and 10,000 watts, enough to run a refrigerator, some lights, a television and a handful of small appliances at once. They typically run on gasoline, propane or natural gas, and nearly all of them come with wheels and handles so one or two people can move them from a garage to the driveway or the bed of a pickup truck. The appeal is largely financial and practical. A portable unit costs roughly $500 to $3,000 depending on output, far less than the price of a hardwired system, and it never needs a professional installer. It also travels. Owners take the same generator camping, to a tailgate, or to a job site to run power tools, and it moves with them if they sell the house and relocate.
The tradeoffs show up in daily use. Someone has to physically set the thing up, start it and run extension cords to whatever needs power, which takes real time and effort during a stressful outage. Fuel tanks typically need refilling every 8 to 16 hours depending on the load, so overnight outages mean waking up to refuel. Output is limited enough that most portable models cannot run a home's HVAC system, forcing tough choices about what stays on. And they are loud: a running portable generator operates around 85 decibels, comparable to a gas powered lawn mower at close range.
The Case for a Permanently Wired Standby System
A standby generator sits outside the house on a concrete pad, wired directly into the home's electrical panel and typically fueled by the home's existing natural gas line. When the power drops, sensors detect the outage and the unit fires up automatically within seconds, switching the house over from grid power to generator power with nobody needing to lift a finger. Northway says this matters most for a specific kind of household. "Homeowners who rely on air conditioning during Houston's summer heat, work from home, have medical equipment, travel frequently, or simply want their home to operate normally during an outage often find that a standby generator provides far greater value and peace of mind," she says.
Because it wires directly into the panel, a standby unit needs no extension cords and no manual plugging in of individual appliances. Residential models produce between 10,000 and 26,000 watts, enough to run an entire house, air conditioning included, without rationing power among devices. Tied to a natural gas line, fuel supply is essentially continuous, so there is no tank to monitor or refill during a multi day outage. They also run quieter than portable units, though not silent.

None of that comes cheap. Installed standby systems run about $8,000 to $16,000 or more, with the final number depending heavily on whether the house needs electrical panel upgrades or new gas line work to support the unit. Professional installation is mandatory, and so is ongoing professional maintenance. This is not something a homeowner services on a Saturday afternoon; skipping scheduled maintenance risks the generator failing exactly when it is needed. The system is also permanent. Disconnecting and moving it is expensive and will likely void the manufacturer's warranty, so it stays behind when the house sells.
Weighing Cost Against What You Actually Need
Choosing between the two options comes down to three practical questions: what you can spend upfront, how much power your household actually requires, and how often your area loses power for extended stretches. On price alone, portable units win by a wide margin, but standby systems carry a strong resale argument. Industry data from Zonda/JLC, a data and analytics company serving the home building sector, puts the return on investment for a standby generator at around 95 percent, and that figure can top 100 percent in regions where severe weather is common and buyers specifically shop for backup power.
Power needs matter just as much as price. Most homes can run essentially normally during an outage on about 20,000 watts, a threshold whole home standby units are built to clear. A typical portable power station, by contrast, tops out around 7,500 to 10,000 watts, which covers a fridge, lights, a television, a microwave and small appliances but rarely an air conditioning system.
Then there is the reality of how often the power actually goes out where you live. In regions where outages are rare and brief, the setup hassle of a portable unit is a minor inconvenience. Where storms and hurricanes routinely knock out power for days at a time, the calculation shifts. "During a hurricane or major storm, fuel can be difficult to find, temperatures can become dangerous, and outages may last for days," Northway says. "A standby generator connected to natural gas or propane can continue operating without requiring the homeowner to refuel or even be home when the outage occurs."
Making the Final Call
Northway frames the decision around what kind of peace of mind a household actually wants. "If the goal is occasional backup power for a few items, a portable generator may be sufficient," she says. "If the goal is comfort, convenience, and peace of mind during extended outages, a standby generator is typically the better long term investment." For renters, people who move frequently, or anyone who just wants basic coverage for the fridge and a few lights, the portable route makes sense both financially and logistically. For homeowners settled in a storm prone region, running medical equipment, or working from home where an outage means lost income, the higher cost of a standby system tends to pay for itself in avoided disruption, and often in resale value when the house eventually changes hands.
